AUGUST EXHIBITION

"Breaking Down Music"

Group Show: Shannon Lucy, Katherine Kisa
August 1st- August 31st

* Opening Reception: Saturday, August 2nd 6pm-9pm

THE SHOWROOM is delighted to announce a group exhibition of two artists whose work explores the dissection, production and nostalgia of music’s physical and emotional forms. With today’s music industry shifting so rapidly, we constantly find ourselves reverting back to the basics, the blues and the beginnings.

SHANNON LUCY, originally from Nashville, has discovered a striking new medium within the classical bars of musical notation.  Her large-scale imaginary scores are comprised of real notes with no direction except for that which the viewer construes from its random measures.  Just as sheet music is a written representation of music, Lucy’s representation of music is rendered to become an ornament of design to enjoy aesthetically. Her compositions are not authoritative but rather free and open to interpretation.  She has captured a certain jovial nonsense entrenched with emotion, chaos and nostalgia, like that which a conductor might feel before he guides his orchestra. Lucy’s Bad Thought series are “visual interpretations” of love, loss and life, like the whistle of old country songs or the whimsy of a children's rhyme.  These undefined musical exaggerations beckon us to look closer and to see it as a unique language and melodic vehicle.  Shannon Lucy currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

KATHERINE KISA dares to dissect the classics through slicing up old 45’s and re-contextualizes their purpose in a beautifully crafted minimal presentation.  These very “cool” pieces made entirely of vinyl records, betoken the impact music has had on our personal, cultural and creative experiences. However, Kisa has chosen a simple, sleek presentation to epitomize the complex association between the mechanical, instrumental and artistic components of music.  The product is a sure thing, fast track back to “the days” we can all recall when a certain band or song introduced us to love, lust, danger or regret.  Kisa invokes this emotional response through the negative space she creates with white paint over vinyl, which seems to enshrine the cropped records creating trophy like dispositions.  Tapping into everything from the simplest ballads to the most complex symphonies, we see her offering tribute to the instruments, production and extraordinary talent behind our vast music industry.  Katherine Kisa currently lives and works in Washington, DC.

CHARLIE RAUH, an interpretive guitar player from Music City, will join us at the opening reception to perform Shannon Lucy’s Bad Thought No. 17.  Charlie has developed a numerical system of playing letters of the alphabet, enabling him to interpret words and images.  His alternative style truly gives this work a voice in a way that was not theoretically calculated but is formally expected.  We get the best of both worlds.

OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, August 2nd  6pm to 9pm during the Gallery Crawl
